Part Two: We've been looking at sample essays from 11, 23, 32, 65, and 107 of Weber Writes. Can you note the independent and dependent clauses in the following introduction paragraph entitled "Correlation Between Sleep Habits and Academic Performance in College Students" (page 11)? You can use the abbreviations IC (independent clause) and DC (dependendt clause). Underline the transitions used to signal independent and dependent clauses. I've already marked some beginning sentences for you in the paragraph below. Remember an independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence. On the other hand, a dependent clause "depends on" an independent clause in order to be written as a complete sentence.
(IC) I have always loved to sleep. (IC) It’s just the way (IC) I have always been . (IC) I am someone (DC) who requires a lot of sleep to function properly. (IC) I kept this in mind (DC) when choosing class times (DC) during my first semester (DC) at Weber State University. (IC) Myreasoning was (DC) that if I chose a later class time (IC continued from the beginning of the sentence)I would get more sleep and as a result do better in class. I chose a 10:30 a.m. class that allowed me to sleep until 9:30 every morning. At first the longer sleep duration seemed to improve my attentiveness in class, but since I was allowed to sleep until 9:30 each morning, I started staying up later. Later class times meant I was stuck on campus until later in the day. I would then stay up until 2:00 a.m. trying to finish my homework. I also noticed I started to feel sleepy during classes. I didn’t have the energy to complete my homework. In addition, I was sleeping less when an important exam came up. I felt like I was always behind on my sleep and was constantly trying to play catch up with my homework. No matter how hard I tried, I seemed to be one step behind.
